It’s time to register for one of our Annual Update Training dates for 2025.
This mandatory training will keep you up to date on our inspection processes. Places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so please register as soon as possible to attend your preferred location.
Inspectors are expected to attend Update Training annually. However, it’s mandatory to attend at least every two years. If you don’t attend for two consecutive years, you will unfortunately be removed from our list of inspectors. There will be no alternative dates for this training – the next opportunity to attend will be summer 2026.
The training will begin at 09:00 and end at 15:30.
Registration closing dates:
When you register, you’ll need to set up a password which is unique to this event. If you ever need to change your booking you’ll need this password, so please keep it safe. If you wish to cancel your booking please contact events@estyn.gov.wales so that your space can be reopened.
If you are badged to inspect more than one sector you have been invited the main sector as noted in your inspector profile. If you think you should be attending training for a different sector please contact events@estyn.gov.wales
Our 2025 summer Update Training is for Peer, Lay and Additional Inspectors only. There will be bespoke Update Training in the autumn for Additional Learning Needs (ALN) Inspectors. ALN Inspectors who have not trained as Peer Inspectors should not attend our summer Update Training. However, anyone who has trained as a Peer Inspector and as an ALN Inspector should attend training in the summer for their sector.
You must have a current DBS in place at the time of training in order to attend. If your DBS is due to expire soon, please contact dbschecks@estyn.gov.wales for information on starting the renewal process.
Directions to the venues can be found on the venue websites:
Do I have to attend this update training?
Inspectors are expected to attend Update Training annually. However, it’s mandatory to attend at least every two years. If you don’t attend for two consecutive years, we will no longer be able to deploy you on inspection and you will be removed from our list of inspectors.
Will there be other dates?
There will be no alternative dates later this year or spring 2026. The next opportunity to attend Annual Update Training will be in the summer 2026 term.
What if I attended Initial or Update Training in the spring?
If you received Initial or Update Training in the spring term you will still need to attend Update Training this summer.
What if I'm unable to attend?
Please email the Events team to explain why you are unavailable.
I’ve been invited to the training for more than one sector – do I have to go to them all?
No – just book onto the training for the sector you inspect most often.
Can I claim expenses for attending the event?
We don’t reimburse expenses for this type of event. You will need to pay your own travel and subsistence costs.
I can’t see my chosen training date on the registration page.
If you can’t see a particular date or location on the booking drop down menu then that location is fully booked. We don’t operate a reserve list, so we recommend checking the page regularly to see if a place has become available.
Can you register for me?
Other than exceptional circumstances, we don’t register on a delegate’s behalf – this is because you need to provide personal information as part of the registration process, for example any dietary or accessibility requirements you have.
Is there a dress code?
Please wear what you would normally wear to your school or PRU.
What if I'm about to retire or have moved provider?
Please ensure your Inspector Profile is up to date. If you have moved provider, you need to inform us and will require a new endorsement. If you have, or are about to retire, you will need to train as an AI if you wish to continue working as an Estyn Inspector.
How do I change my status from Peer Inspector to Additional Inspector?
If you wish to change your inspector status from Peer Inspector to Additional Inspector, for example following retirement, you will need to submit a request to Planning@estyn.gov.wales. To be eligible you will need to have completed at least one successful inspection (grade A or B) within the 2 preceding years.
What if I no longer wish to be a Peer Inspector?
If you no longer wish to be a Peer Inspector for any reason, please email planning@estyn.gov.wales so that we can make arrangements to remove you from our list and recruit a replacement.
